JoSAA cutoff को सही तरीके से पढ़ने के लिए सिर्फ closing rank देखना काफी नहीं है। आपको यह भी देखना होगा कि वह rank किस category की है, कौन सा quota है, Gender-Neutral seat है या Female-Only seat, Home State है या Other State, कौन सा round है, और cutoff CRL rank दिखा रहा है या category rank।
सीधी बात समझिए:
JoSAA cutoff prediction नहीं है।
JoSAA cutoff previous year seat allotment का data है।
इसे guarantee नहीं, planning reference की तरह use करना चाहिए।

JoSAA cutoff का मतलब है किसी institute और branch में seat allotment के दौरान candidates को किस rank range तक seat मिली।
JoSAA cutoff generally Opening Rank और Closing Rank के रूप में दिखता है।
यह cutoff institute, branch, category, quota, gender pool और round के हिसाब से अलग-अलग होता है।
Example:
किसी NIT में Computer Science Engineering Branch का cutoff अलग होगा।

Opening Rank क्या होता है?
Opening Rank का मतलब है उस round में किसी particular institute + branch + category + quota + gender pool में seat पाने वाले candidates में सबसे बेहतर rank या earliest allotted rank।
Simple language में:
Opening Rank बताता है कि उस branch में allotment किस rank से शुरू हुआ।
Example
मान लीजिए किसी NIT में CSE Branch के लिए data ऐसा है:

इसका मतलब उस specific round, category, quota और gender pool में seat allotment 3500 rank के आसपास से शुरू हुआ और 9200 rank तक गया।
Opening Rank का Use
Opening Rank से आपको branch की demand और competition का idea मिलता है।
लेकिन choice filling में केवल Opening Rank देखकर decision नहीं लेना चाहिए। Closing Rank practical planning के लिए ज्यादा useful होता है।
Closing Rank क्या होता है?
Closing Rank का मतलब है उस round में किसी particular institute + branch + category + quota + gender pool में seat पाने वाले last candidate की rank।
Simple language में:
Closing Rank बताता है कि उस branch में seat allotment किस rank तक गया।
Example
अगर किसी branch का Closing Rank 18500 है, तो इसका मतलब उस round में उस particular seat type, category, quota और gender pool में last allotted candidate की rank 18500 तक गई।
Closing Rank का Use
Closing Rank choice filling planning में useful है क्योंकि इससे candidate को approximate range समझ आती है।
लेकिन यह guarantee नहीं है।
Previous year closing rank इस year repeat होगी, ऐसा assume करना गलत है।

JoSAA cutoff पढ़ते समय सबसे बड़ी confusion यही होती है:
“यह rank CRL है या category rank?”
Official JoSAA OR-CR archive के note के अनुसार:
- Open seats के Opening/Closing Ranks CRL represent करते हैं।
- EWS, OBC-NCL, SC और ST seats के Opening/Closing Ranks respective category ranks represent करते हैं।
- PwD seats के Opening/Closing Ranks respective categories के PwD ranks represent करते हैं।
इसलिए Open cutoff और category cutoff को same scale पर compare करना गलत है।
CRL क्या होता है?
CRL का मतलब है Common Rank List.
Open seats के लिए JoSAA OR-CR में ranks CRL के आधार पर दिखाई जाती हैं।

अगर Open category में किसी branch का Closing Rank 12000 है, तो यह CRL rank के reference में समझा जाएगा।
Category Rank क्या होता है?
Category Rank candidate की respective category में rank होती है।
EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST seats के लिए JoSAA cutoff respective category ranks को represent करता है।
Example
अगर OBC-NCL category में किसी branch का Closing Rank 4500 दिख रहा है, तो यह generally OBC-NCL category rank के reference में समझना चाहिए, CRL नहीं।
Common Mistake
Candidate अपनी CRL rank को OBC/SC/ST category cutoff से compare कर देता है।
यह गलत है।
Category cutoff category rank से compare करना चाहिए, subject to official rule.
CRL vs Category Rank Example
मान लीजिए किसी branch का cutoff data ऐसा दिखता है:

यहां OPEN 15000 CRL है।

अगर कोई OBC candidate अपनी CRL 18000 देखकर OBC closing rank 5200 से compare करेगा, तो calculation गलत होगी। उसे अपनी OBC-NCL category rank से compare करना चाहिए।
Gender-Neutral और Female-Only Seats क्या होती हैं?
JoSAA cutoff में Gender-Neutral और Female-Only seat pools भी दिखते हैं।
Gender-Neutral Seat Pool
Gender-Neutral seats सभी eligible candidates के लिए होती हैं, gender के आधार पर अलग reserved नहीं होतीं।
Male और female दोनों candidates Gender-Neutral seats के लिए considered हो सकते हैं, subject to rank, category, quota और choice order.
Female-Only Seat Pool
Female-Only seats female candidates के लिए separate pool हो सकती हैं। JoSAA FAQ/reference में Female-Only pool को Gender-Neutral से separate pool बताया गया है और female candidates both pools के लिए eligible हो सकती हैं, subject to rules and availability.
Female Candidates को क्या समझना चाहिए?
Female candidates को cutoff पढ़ते समय दोनों pools check करने चाहिए:
- Gender-Neutral
- Female-Only
कई बार Female-Only cutoff अलग हो सकता है। लेकिन इसे guarantee नहीं मानना चाहिए।

Home State vs Other State Cutoff
NIT admission में Home State और Other State cutoff बहुत important होता है।
IITs में generally All India basis होता है, लेकिन NITs में Home State और Other State quota का practical impact होता है।
Home State Cutoff
Home State cutoff उस NIT के Home State quota के candidates के लिए होता है, subject to official State of Eligibility rules.
Example:
Bihar State of Eligibility वाले candidate के लिए NIT Patna में Home State quota relevant हो सकता है।
Other State Cutoff
Other State cutoff उस NIT के Home State के अलावा बाकी states/UTs के candidates के लिए होता है।
Example:
Bihar का candidate NIT Trichy के लिए Other State quota में considered हो सकता है, subject to official rules.
