AKTU Choice Filling Date 2026 is one of the most important dates in the UPTAC counselling. Choice filling AKTU date 2026 is expected to start immediately after the registration window would close that is by July 2026. This short but important period would allow the candidate to analyze, fill in and finally lock their choices before the AKTU choice filling 2026 date is announced.
Unlike registration which is a straightforward form submission, choice filling requires genuine research and strategy. The quality of your preference list has a direct impact on the quality of your seat allotment.
AKTU Choice Filling Date 2026 – Round-Wise Schedule
| Round | Choice Filling Opens | Choice Filling Closes |

| Round 2 | August 2026 | August 2026 |
| Special Round | September 2026 | September 2026 |
How the AKTU Choice Filling System Works
AKTU operates on a preference based allotment using UPTAC. Here’s a step-by-step process:
Once all the candidates who registered their preferences lock their choice (before the AKTU choice filling date 2026 last date), the candidates are ranked in decreasing order based on merit, JEE Main rank for B.Tech and CUET rank for most other courses.
The candidates are then assigned based on rank (starting from the highest rank) the topmost preference they locked that has available seats under their category. The process continues down the merit list until all available seats are filled.
The key implication: you can safely place ambitious choices at the top. You will never be forced into a lower preference if a higher one is achievable. There is no penalty for aiming high.
Step-by-Step: How to Fill Choices on the UPTAC Portal
- Log In: Log in to the UPTAC portal by providing the application form number and password which you entered at the time of form submission using the below link: https://uptac.admissions.nic.in
- Access Seat Matrix: Obtain and browse the official UPTAC 2026 seat matrix on the website, prior to choice filling. This will help you know vacant seats for college-wise, course-wise and category-wise; it’s the most reliable tool for judicious choice filling.
- Add Preferences: Search for colleges by name, branch, district, or type. Add combinations in order of priority, most preferred first.
- Consider Previous Year Cutoffs: Use past opening and closing ranks to verify each choice you make against your rank. If your rank is always higher than the closing rank for that college-branch-category, do not fill it as one of your top choices.
- Review and Reorder Choices: After filling out the whole list, review them and reorder appropriately by clicking and dragging choices up and down the list.
- Lock the choices: On the day the AKTU choice filling date 2026 comes, click the “Lock Choices” and make sure the confirmation is displayed that your choices have been locked and also save the confirmation page.
How Many Choices Should You Fill?
There is no fixed upper limit on the number of choices in UPTAC. The data consistently supports filling more choices rather than fewer:
| Priority Tier | Suggested Choices |
| High Ambition (top government colleges) | 5 to 8 |
| Realistic Middle Ground | 10 to 15 |
| Safe Backup (private colleges) | 8 to 12 |
Candidates who fill only 3 to 5 choices run a significant risk of no allotment if those seats are taken. A list of 25 to 35 well-researched choices is the recommended range for most candidates.
Key Factors to Consider While Filling Choices
- College type: Government and Govt. Aided colleges usually have tough cut-offs. Don’t neglect private colleges; they are a good option to have for a backup.
- Branch preference: CSE and IT branches generally remain very tough with low (most competitive) cut-offs. The non-trendy branches like Civil, Agriculture or Textile Engg have generally very generous cut-offs and with your score you may get an even good college in these branches with your rank.
- City and region: Factors like placement system of the city, accommodation (hostels) and distance from home should be given consideration. A somewhat lower rated college at a vibrant industrial city can prove to be better than a higher ranked college in a very interior and non-industrial location.
- NIRF and State Ranking: Know where the college ranks in terms of AKTU affiliation. Placement in affiliated network varies quite a lot in terms of placement opportunities, faculty and infrastructure.
- Reservation Benefits: Understand Sub-Category Benefits – Female (UPGL, 20% horizontal reservation), Defence (UPAF, 5%), Divyangjan (UPHC, 5%): These can make your effective rank better for reservation and fetch you seat at a place which is out of reach for you in General.
