How to Make the Most of the Round 1 Choice Filling Window

Use the official seat matrix: AKTU publishes the seat matrix on https://uptac.samarth.edu.in before choice filling opens. It shows available seats by college, branch, and category. Always verify available seats in your category before adding a choice.

Look up last year cutoffs: The only indicator that tells where your JEE Main 2026 rank actually is is Round 1 closing ranks from the previous year. Download your Round 1 2024, 2025 cutoff PDFs from the portal and compare each option with other options available at each point before listing them.

Make a balanced list: In the list put the top government colleges, mid-tier colleges that look realistically within reach in the middle, and the colleges from the private sector at the bottom as your backup plan. Putting only government colleges in your preference list, but having no options from private sector, is an unnecessarily risky step which will result in no allocation.

Take reservation benefit into consideration: If you belong to one of theUPGL (Female), UPAF (Defense) and UPHC (Divyangjan) horizontal sub-categories, then your effective rank is higher in a reserved category of seats, and therefore, consider this. By doing so, you can open up colleges which would be out of reach in general category.

Lock before 25 June: Do not wait until the last day. Portal traffic spikes near the deadline. Lock your choices at least a day early and save the locked confirmation page immediately. Choices that are filled but not locked are completely ignored during allotment, there are no exceptions.

Round 3 is your final edit: Round 3 choice locking (6–7 July 2026) is the last opportunity to change preferences. Those choices are also used for all further rounds including internal sliding. Treat Round 3 as your definitive, final list.
