IPU B.Tech Counselling Process 2026 is the step-by-step online admission procedure followed by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) to allot B.Tech engineering seats for the academic session 2026-27.
The entire process runs through the official admission portal https://ipu.admissions.nic.in and is based on JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 merit, GGSIPU does not conduct its own entrance test for B.Tech (Programme Code 131). From the day registration opens to the day you report at your allotted engineering institute, every activity follows a fixed sequence with strict deadlines.
Understanding the process end-to-end before you start is not optional, missing a single step, particularly the Part Academic Fee payment, can exclude you from the counselling entirely. This article explains the complete IPU B.Tech Counselling Process 2026 in the exact order it happens.
How IPU B.Tech Counselling Works – Overview
The IPU B.Tech Counselling Process is divided into eight structured stages as defined in the GGSIPU Admission Brochure 2026-27 (Chapter 10). These stages apply uniformly to all online counselling programmes including B.Tech under Programme Code 131.
| Stage | Activity |
|---|---|
| 1 | Online Registration + Application Form + Application Fee Payment |
| 2 | Qualification through JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 (NTA) |
| 3 | Choice / Preference Filling |
| 4 | Payment of Part Academic Fee (mandatory) |
| 5 | Online Document Verification (for allotted candidates who paid Part Academic Fee) |
| 6 | Download Allotment Letter |
| 7 | Submit Willingness – Freeze / Float / Withdraw |
| 8 | Reporting to Allotted Institute + Original Document Verification + Balance Fee Payment |
Stage 1: Online Registration and Application Fee Payment
The process begins with candidate registration on https://ipu.admissions.nic.in. The registration window opens after the declaration of JEE Main 2026 results, and the exact opening date is published on www.ipu.ac.in.
During registration you fill:
- Personal details – name (as per Class X certificate), date of birth, gender, nationality, mobile, email
- Category details – General / SC / ST / OBC / EWS / PwD / Defence / Sports as applicable
- Qualifying exam details – Class X and XII board, roll number, year of passing, PCM marks (minimum 55% aggregate required)
- JEE Main 2026 details – application number, roll number, rank, and score from your official JEE Main 2026 score card
- Programme Code – select 131 for B.Tech engineering (all specializations admitted through JEE Main)
After filling the form, upload required documents including your photograph, Class X and XII marksheets, JEE Main score card, and category certificates if applicable. Then pay the Application / Registration Fee online via Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or UPI.
| Fee Type | Amount |
|---|---|
| University Application / Registration Fee | Rs.1,500 |
| Counselling Participation Fee | Rs.1,000 |
| Total Initial Amount to Participate in Counselling | Rs.2,500 |
Important: Keep your JEE Main E-Admit Card safe from this point forward. It is required at every stage from counselling, document verification, and institute reporting.
Stage 2: JEE Main 2026 – The Basis of Admission
GGSIPU prepares an inter-se merit / rank list for all B.Tech candidates based on JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 scores. This list is published on www.ipu.ac.in. No individual SMS or email is sent, candidates must check the website themselves.
The rank in this inter-se list determines which seat you get during allotment. Class XII board marks have no weightage for B.Tech allotment. Your JEE Main rank is everything.
How ties are broken in inter-se merit:
In case two or more candidates have the same JEE Main score, GGSIPU applies the following tie-breaking rule:
- Marks obtained in Mathematics in the qualifying Class XII examination (Higher marks gets preference)
- If the candidates still have equal merit, the marks obtained in Physics in the qualifying Class XII examination shall be given higher preference.
- If still there is any tie, the candidates born earlier (as per Date of Birth) shall get the preference.
Stage 3: Choice / Preference Filling
After registration, the choice filling window opens on the admission portal. Here you fill your preferred combinations of institute + branch in order of priority.
How to fill choices effectively for B.Tech:
- Research the previous year closing ranks for each institute-branch combination at GGSIPU. This data is available on www.ipu.ac.in in the previous year allotment results.
- Fill choices starting with your most preferred (top institutes, top branches) and go down to more accessible options.
- Fill the maximum possible number of choices. There is no penalty for filling more choices. Candidates who fill only a few choices significantly reduce their allotment chances, especially those with moderate JEE Main ranks.
- Do not leave choice filling for the last day. Portal traffic is highest near deadlines and the risk of technical failure is real.
Choice filling is your single most important strategic decision in the entire IPU B.Tech counselling process. A well-prepared choice list can mean the difference between getting a top CSE seat and missing out entirely.
Stage 4: Payment of Part Academic Fee (Most Critical Step)
After the allotment result is declared in each round, candidates who have received a seat must pay the Part Academic Fee within the stipulated payment window.
Round 1 Part Academic Fee Payment Window: 09 July 2026 to 12 July 2026
This payment is not optional. It is the mechanism by which you confirm your participation in the allotment. Here is what happens based on whether you pay or not:
| Action | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Pay Part Academic Fee within window | Your allotment is confirmed; you proceed to document verification and willingness submission |
| Do NOT pay Part Academic Fee | You are treated as having declined the seat; you are excluded from all ongoing counselling rounds; eligible only for Spot Round as a fresh candidate |
Stage 5: Online Document Verification
After the Part Academic Fee is submitted, the documents submitted by you get checked online by GGSIPU, after which your allotment processing continues. This does not involve any visit to the campus, as it is carried out entirely on the portal. However, all your submitted documents must be clear and legible as well as fully complete, and also consistent with your submitted application details. If there is any difference, then a query gets raised that must be addressed with extreme urgency so that your verification doesn’t get completed late.
The document verification is done by the verification officer. The following items are checked in detail by the concerned officers:
- Name and Date of Birth between the application and class X cert.
- PCM percentage is above or equal to 55% in class XII as indicated.
- Category cert must be valid and active, issued by proper authorities.
- JEE Main Score Card as submitted and as filled in the application must be same.
- In case of OBC, the NCL cert must be current and active.
- In case of PwD, disability % must be >= 40 % as per disability cert issued by competent medical authority.
Once your documents are verified, you get the confirmation message in the portal and you are now able to download your allotment letter.
Stage 6: Download Allotment Letter
After successful online document verification, download your Allotment Letter from the admission portal. The allotment letter is the official document confirming the institute and branch allocated to you based on your JEE Main rank and submitted choices.
Keep multiple printed copies of this letter. It is required at the time of institute reporting and for any subsequent interactions with the university or institute regarding your admission.
Stage 7: Submit Willingness – Freeze, Float, or Withdraw
Upon downloading your allotment letter, it is mandatory for you to submit your Willingness through the portal. You have 3 options to choose from:
Freeze
If you are satisfied with your present allotment and would like to quit the counselling rounds, you should choose freeze. Freezing means confirming your seat in the given institute and branch. Upon freezing, you need to report to the institute within the reporting time and get admitted.
Float
Select Float if you want to keep your current allotment but also want to try for a better seat in the next counselling round (Round 2 or Sliding Round). If a better allotment is available in the next round based on your remaining choice list, you will be upgraded automatically. If not, you retain your current seat.
Caution about Float: When you Float, your current seat is still held for you as a backup. However, if you fail to respond or pay fees in the subsequent round, you may lose both your current seat and the upgraded one. Make sure you are actively monitoring the portal when you Float.
Online Withdrawal
Select Withdraw if you do not want the allotted seat and wish to exit the counselling process. On submitting withdrawal within the stipulated dates:
- ₹1,000 (or as applicable) is deducted from the amount already paid
- The balance is refunded
- Your participation in all ongoing rounds ends
Stage 8: Reporting to Allotted Institute
The final stage is physically reporting to your allotted engineering institute, getting your original documents verified, and paying the balance fee to complete your admission.
What to carry at the time of reporting:
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Allotment Letter (printed) | Downloaded from GGSIPU portal |
| JEE Main 2026 Admit Card (original) | Mandatory at every stage |
| JEE Main 2026 Score Card (original) | Must match entered details |
| Class X Certificate and Marksheet (original) | For age and basic qualification |
| Class XII Certificate and Marksheet (original) | For eligibility verification |
| Category Certificate – SC/ST/OBC NCL/EWS (original) | If claiming reservation |
| PwD Certificate (original) | If claiming disability benefit |
| Defence / Sports Certificate (original) | If applicable |
| Part Academic Fee Receipt (printed) | Proof of fee payment |
| Recent Passport-size Photographs | Multiple copies |
| Photo Identity Proof (Aadhar / PAN / Passport) | Any one valid ID |
| Migration Certificate | If from a board other than CBSE |
| Gap Year Affidavit | If applicable |
Originals are verified and returned at the time of reporting, you are not required to submit original documents to the institute. Self-attested photocopies are what the institute retains. GGSIPU’s policy clearly states that candidates are not required to leave original documents with institutes.
IPU B.Tech Counselling Process 2026 – Sliding Round
Sliding Round (Round 3) is a final opportunity for seat upgradation. Candidates who are currently holding a seat (via Float) can modify their choices between 21–23 July 2026 to add newer or better preferences.
How the Sliding Round works:
- Add new institute-branch combinations you missed or were not available earlier
- Delete choices you no longer want
- Rearrange the order of your existing choices
- Choices are locked and sliding allotment is processed
- Results declared on 24 July 2026
- Fee payment window: 24–28 July 2026
- Reporting: 30 July 2026 to 03 August 2026
If you receive a better seat in the Sliding Round, your previous seat is released and the new allotment is confirmed. If no better seat is available, your current allotment is retained.
IPU B.Tech Counselling Process 2026 – Spot Round
Spot Round is conducted only if seats remain vacant after all standard rounds. It is not guaranteed. GGSIPU will notify whether a Spot Round is being held on 20 July 2026 on www.ipu.ac.in.
Who can participate in the Spot Round:
- Fresh candidates who missed earlier rounds
- Candidates who were excluded from earlier rounds due to non-payment of Part Academic Fee
- Candidates who withdrew from earlier rounds and now wish to re-apply
Spot Round typically has relaxed seat availability, branches and institutes that could not be filled in earlier rounds are available. However, the popular programmes at top institutes are usually already filled by this stage.
