Stage 1: Registration and Merit List Preparation
All eligible candidates register on the IKGPTU counselling portal, fill their application form, upload the required documents, and pay the registration fee. The fee is non-refundable.
After registration closes, IKGPTU prepares the merit list. For B.Tech first year, merit is based on JEE Main 2026 scores. For B.Tech Lateral Entry, merit is based on qualifying diploma exam marks or CET Lateral Entry scores as notified.
Merit lists are prepared separately for:
- General (Open) category
- SC/ST category
- Backward Class category
- Defence category
- Sports category
- PwD category
- All other reserved categories
- Punjab State quota (85%) and All India quota (15%) separately
A provisional merit list is published first. Candidates can raise objections or corrections during the objection window. After this, the final merit list is declared and no further changes are made.
Stage 2: Choice Filling and Locking
Once the final merit list is out, the choice filling window opens. Candidates log in and add their preferred colleges and branches in order of priority. A few important points about choice filling:
- Fill as many choices as possible. There is no upper limit. Higher the number of choices, the greater are the chances of seat allotment.
- Your order of preferences are very important. Fill in the most desired choice at the top.
- The filled choices are locked after the choice filling window closes and they cannot be altered afterward.
- The same locked choices are used for all rounds of allotment. There is no option to change between rounds.
Stage 3: TFW Counselling (Held Before Main Rounds)
Before the main counselling rounds begin, a separate Tuition Fee Waiver counselling is held for candidates who declared TFW eligibility during registration. A separate merit list is prepared for TFW candidates.
TFW seats are 5% supernumerary over the approved intake per course. Only Punjab quota candidates whose family income from all sources is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh per year are eligible.
Once admitted under TFW, the candidate cannot change their college or branch for the entire duration of the course.
Stage 4: Round 1 (Main Allotment)

Those candidates who did not get seat in Round 1 will automatically be considered for Round 2 on the basis of merit rank and locked choice. Those candidates who secured a seat in Round 1 and is interested in some better seat may also be considered for upgrading in Round 2 if the same was applied.

Stage 7: Direct Admissions
Any seats still remaining after spot counselling is completed may be filled by colleges directly, as per university guidelines, within the last date specified. This is the final stage of the admission process.
Stage 8: Physical Reporting at the College
After any round where a seat has been allotted to you, you are required to physically report at the finally allotted college. What takes place during physical reporting?
1. Document verification: The college will be verifying your original documents. Any document, whether misplaced or wrongly made will result in cancellation of admission.
2. Payment of fee: The initial installment of fee required by the college is paid when you are physically reporting at the college. It depends upon the college and the semester.
