B.Pharm vs Pharm D – Understanding the Difference Before Filling Choices
Both these programmes differ significantly in the length and career options and this should be taken care of during choice filling.
B.Pharm is a 4 year undergraduate course concentrating on pharmaceutical sciences, drug formulation, quality control, industry. Graduates find careers in pharma manufacturing, R&D, retail pharmacy, further study for M.Pharm or MBA.
Pharm D is a 6 year integrated clinical pharmacy course which is a good option if you see your career in patient care, hospital pharmacy or clinical research. While it may appear more rigorous because of 6 years but it makes you eligible for clinical careers after graduation which is not an option for a B.Pharm graduate without further study.
When filling choices on the UPTAC portal, these appear as separate course categories with separate seat matrices and separate closing ranks. Selecting both in the same choice list is only advisable if you are genuinely open to either programme.

Key Factors for B.Pharm Choice Filling Strategy
- Colleges under AKTU for pharmacy: You must consider your choice of college carefully even for a B.Pharm program. For each AKTU affiliated college you have short-listed for B.Pharm, check whether they have PCI (Pharmacy Council of India) approval, lab facilities and qualifications of the faculty.
- Past CUET based closing rank: As the B.Pharm seats are filled through CUET UG instead of JEE main, previous years closing ranks for B.Pharm should be taken into consideration not that of engineering colleges.
- Government vs. Private Colleges: Government pharmacy colleges will have very high closing ranks, but Private colleges having a PCI approval and good placement record in the pharmaceutical industry can prove to be excellent backup colleges.
- Location & industry association: Uttar Pradesh has good industrial facilities in the Pharmaceutical sector in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Colleges in proximity to these cities will have good internship opportunities and better placement in the pharmaceutical sector.
- Benefits of horizontal reservation: Female candidates would be entitled to the UPGL horizontal reservation of 20% applied in all B.Pharm seats like all other UPTAC courses.
