Types of Colleges in UPTAC 2026

UPTAC covers three broad types of institutions:

  • Government/ Government Aided College: All the seats in these colleges are allocated based on counselling done by UPTAC. Such colleges usually have high demand among students because of low fees, excellent infrastructure, and good reputation in academics. Cut-off marks for such colleges are usually tough.
  • Government Self-Funded Colleges: These institutions come under the control of the government but are funded independently. All the seats in such colleges are allocated based on counselling.
  • Private Colleges: 85% of seats are filled through UPTAC counselling. The remaining 15% are filled by the institute itself under Management/NRI quota as per UP Government orders.

What to Check Before Shortlisting Colleges

Simply being on the UPTAC colleges list does not make every college equally suitable. Here is what to evaluate:

  • NIRF / State Ranking: Look at the rankings of the colleges in engineering or management.
  • Placement record: Look at the average and maximum salary offered in the previous batches, and also look at the companies that recruit on campus.
  • AICTE Approval: All colleges appearing in the list are approved by AICTE, but check whether the particular course that you are pursuing has the approval.
  • Hostels / Infrastructure: For students who have moved away from their hometowns, look at the quality of the hostels available on campus.
  • Fee structure: Government colleges have significantly lower tuition fees regulated by the UP Government. Private college fees are fixed by the UP Fee Fixation Committee.
  • Location: Proximity to home and the industrial/IT ecosystem of the city can impact internship and placement opportunities.
