Understanding how the merit list is prepared, what factors affect your ranking, and how tie-breaking works gives you a clearer picture of where you actually stand before counselling begins.

What Is MP DTE Counselling Merit List?

The MP DTE Merit List is not a separate exam or score. It is prepared using the JEE Main 2026 All India Rank (CRL) published by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Only candidates with a positive composite score in JEE Main 2026 are eligible to appear in the merit list.

The merit list is category-wise separate lists are prepared for:

  • Unreserved / General (UR)
  • Scheduled Caste (SC)
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST)
  • Other Backward Classes excluding Creamy Layer (OBC)
  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS)

Within each category, further separation happens based on class (Sainik, Freedom Fighter, Divyangjan, Technical Stream, NCC, and Nil/X class) and gender (Open/OP and Female/F).

Sports Weightage in Merit List

This is a feature specific to Madhya Pradesh that many candidates overlook. Students in Madhya Pradesh who have won a gold medal in a national level event will qualify for this additional 10% weightage to be added to their total JEE Main score when preparing the merit list for the JEE.

Key conditions for sports weightage:

  • The applicant must have participated in a national level competition, which may include all types of national level competition (Open, Junior, Senior, and National Games).
  • Competitions classified as national-level competitions as outlined in this subheading. Any other national-level competition not covered in this subheading will not factor into the calculation of the sports weightage.
  • The applicant must submit a certificate from the Director Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, in Format-9.
  • Candidates who receive the 10% weightage will be ranked beneath candidates who did not receive a weightage but received the same or equivalent final score.

This means if two candidates end up with the same score after weightage is added, the one who did not use any weightage is ranked higher. Plan accordingly.

Tie-Breaking Rules in MP DTE Merit List

When two or more candidates have the same JEE Main rank, the MP DTE Merit List follows a specific tie-breaking sequence to determine the final order:

PriorityTie-Breaking Criterion
1stHigher marks in qualifying exam (10+2) overall
2ndHigher marks in the three required qualifying exam subjects combined
3rdHigher age – older candidate ranks higher
4thAlphabetical order of name in English

This same tie-breaking sequence applies regardless of whether the tie is in JEE Main rank or in qualifying exam marks. The process is entirely objective no manual intervention or discretion is exercised.

Category-Wise and Class-Wise Structure of Merit List

The MP DTE Merit List is structured in layers. Every candidate falls into one vertical category and one horizontal class. Understanding this structure helps you interpret your actual position correctly.

Vertical Categories (Reservation based):

  • Unreserved (UR): No reservation benefit
  • SC (Scheduled Caste): 16% reservation
  • ST (Scheduled Tribe): 20% reservation
  • OBC (Other Backward Classes excluding Creamy Layer): 14% reservation
  • EWS (Economically Weaker Section): 10% reservation

Horizontal Classes (Cross-category, applicable within each vertical category):

  • Sainik (S) – Defence candidates: 5% horizontal reservation
  • Freedom Fighter (FF): 3% horizontal reservation
  • Divyangjan/PwD (D): 3% horizontal reservation
  • Technical Stream (TS): 1% horizontal reservation
  • NCC ‘B’ Certificate holders: 2% in Government/Aided colleges
  • Nil/X (no horizontal class): Remaining candidates

Gender split within each category and class:

  • Female (F): 30% compartmentalized reservation within each class and category
  • Open (OP): Male or female candidates in the open pool

A candidate can claim only one vertical category. If vacant female seats exist in a class but no female candidates are available, they go to Open (OP) candidates of the same class. If OP candidates are also unavailable, they move to the Nil/X class of the same category.

How Vacant Reserved Seats Are Redistributed

After the first round of counselling, if reserved category seats remain vacant, they are redistributed in the following sequence as per DTE MP rules:

  • ST seats – SC candidates
  • SC seats – ST candidates
  • ST/SC combined vacant seats – OBC candidates
  • OBC vacant seats – ST candidates

After all reserved category counselling, any remaining vacant reserved seats are merged into the unreserved pool and re-allotted. Reserved category candidates who appear in the unreserved merit list are first considered for unreserved seats. If they do not get a seat in the unreserved pool based on their preference, they are then considered for their reserved category seats.

Key Points to Check After Merit List Is Published

Once the merit list goes live, do the following immediately:

  • Check your rank in the correct category – do not compare your rank with the General/UR category if you belong to a reserved category
  • Verify all personal details – name, date of birth, category, domicile status should match your documents exactly
  • Check if sports weightage was applied correctly – if you submitted Format-9, verify the 10% addition is reflected
  • Raise a grievance promptly – if anything is incorrect, the grievance window is short. Missing it means you participate with incorrect data
  • Note your rank in the female sub-category – if you are a female candidate, check both your OP rank and your F-category rank, as seat allotment uses the more beneficial position

Second Round Merit List and Vacant Seat Allotment

If seats remain vacant after Round 1 of centralized counselling, DTE MP may conduct a second round. For the second round:

  • Only candidates who were not allotted a seat in Round 1, or whose allotment was cancelled, participate
  • Fresh merit list consideration is not required, the same registered candidates participate
  • The competent authority may conduct second-round counselling based on JEE Main rank or, in some cases, qualifying exam marks, the decision is made based on the number of vacant seats and willing candidates
  • Seats available in Round 2 are based on the unreserved category only, all Round 2 seats are treated as open seats with a combined merit list of all category candidates
