Formally, the journey of Birla Institue of Applied Science (BIAS) Bhimtal, Nainital began in 1969. However, it starts with the establishment of a Centre of the Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR) founded by Shri B. M. Birla.
Furthermore, he is a renowned industrialist in the newly developing Bhimtal industrial belt.
Moreover, the aim of Birla Institue of Applied Science (BIAS) Bhimtal, Nainital was to provide basic workshop facilities and testing grounds for entrepreneurs to set up industrial units in the region.
However, with the backing of educational institutions like Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi and B. M. Birla Science & Technology Centre, Jaipur.

Also, it was a natural progression that an academic institution was established on the same campus. Further, it was established with two great leaders of Indian industry namely Shri G. P. Birla and Shri C. K. Birla being its founding members.

So, this course has now been converted into a 4-years degree programme (post 10+2) with starting the year 2003-04.
