IT WAS 1984 WHEN THE parliamentarian, educator and well known leader of south India Dr. G. Viswanathan founded Vellore Engineering College With a thought that this institution would offer world-class education to students who would in turn create an indelible impact on the society. In 1984 the college was started with a capacity of only 180 students of UG courses and today it is a university having four different campuses, 25,000 students including more than 1000 international students enrolled in 53 undergraduate and graduate programs with nearly 16,000 residing on the campus.



Programs at VIT are accredited by the Institutes of Engineers, India (IEI).  The  accreditation  Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) of the US accredited the Civil, Mechanical, Information Technology, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Electrical & Electronics Engineering programmes.


VIT has been ranked No. 1 private university and 13th overall best university ahead of many IITs and NITs in India, by National Institutional Ranking Frame work published by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in April 2016. It has been ranked 4th best engineering college in India by the renowned India Today Nielsen Survey 2016. It has been constantly ranked in the Top 10 Engineering colleges in India for the past several years by renowned rankings which include India Today Group, The Week, Hindustan Times, Career 360 and many more.

Campuses – VIT has following campuses

1. Vellore Campus

The university's main campus in Vellore is on 250 acres of land. The campus resembles a city, with lake, gardens, lawns, residential complexes, food courts, hair salons and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the needs of residents.


VIT is in the city of Vellore in India's southern state, Tamilnadu between Chennai and Bangalore. It is 130 km west of Chennai and 180 km east of Bangalore. The nearest airport is Chennai (two and half hours drive). Katpadi is the nearest railway station, 3 km from campus and accessible by train and road from Chennai and Bengaluru. 

2. Chennai campus

The Chennai campus is on the Vendalur-Kelambakkam road. It is known for its greenery and is called the Green Campus which spreads over 180 acres. It has an open-air amphitheatre. It has a library, ATM facilities, and food spots. University sporting facilities include an athletic track, basketball courts, badminton court, tennis court and football ground. The campus is WiFi enabled. There is a music room and a dance room to encourage students to form dance groups and create music.


The campus is midway between Vandalur and Kelambakkam in South Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is 30 km from Chennai airport and 42 km from Chennai Central Railway station. It is accessible by Metro train and deluxe buses from  Airport and Central Railway Junction. The nearest suburban railway station is Vandalur, which is 9 km from the campus.  

3. Amaravati campus


VIT IS the first university to set up a campus in Amravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The new state private university will be called VIT-AP. VIT-AP has been allotted a 200-acre land parcel (in two phases). Construction of the first academic and hostel buildings will commence in November 2016, with classes scheduled to commence in July 2017. The campus will offer five B.Tech programmes and a five-year M.Tech (Software Engineering) programme for students who have completed their 12th standard. Apart from these, research programmes including Ph.D. will be offered.

4. Bhopal Campus

Foundation stone for VIT Bhopal campus at Shehore, Madhya Pradesh was laid down by Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Chief Minister) on 20 October 2016. Bhopal campus is to be spread over an area of 100 acres with an investment of 500 Crores.

Admission Process

The most highly sought after B.Tech degrees from VIT University are achieved by successfully getting through the VITEEE examination conducted every year. The students based on their merit are given a range of options to pursue their under graduation degree. The university currently offers 27 undergraduate programmes, and in addition to this has recently launched the B.Arch degree for students willing to pursue Architecture. The admission into the B.Arch degree is procured through a successful NATA score. Many research centres are also part of the schools, which promote inter-departmental collaboration and provide a platform for students to delve into new research projects.





Only a resident / non resident Indian national is eligible for study in the university. PIO and OCI holder are also eligible to apply for VITEEE-2017. (Foreign Candidates studied/studying in abroad can apply directly through foreign category only).

If a student wants to get admission in VIT he/she should appear for VITEEE-2017 and he/she should have either completed or shall be appearing in 2017, in any one of the following qualifying examinations:


Candidates appearing for the VITEEE in 2017 should have secured an aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in the qualifying examination (+2/Intermediate). It should be 50% for the following categories:

Age Limit

Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after 1st July 1995 are eligible to apply for VITEEE-2017.
